First RAQG Quilt Show!

June 24, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Richmond Area Quilters Guild First Quilt Show

Richmond Area Quilters Guild will be holding its first Quilt Show on Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Landmark Court, a retirement residence for seniors!  This is a special event celebrating the 10th anniversary of both the RAQG and Landmark Court!

The show will be held in the ground floor lounge and will be accompanied by a tea sponsored and run by Landmark Court.

The coordinators of the show (Nancy Sprules, Jacquie Fuller and Lynne Rochette) are asking for 50 quilts, no larger than twin size. to be exhibited on metal frames provided by Landmark and on sofas and quilt frames placed strategically around the lounge.  We encourage those who have wearable art items to donate some to the show, as well as miniature quilts and work from groups within the Guild such as the doll makers and the embroiderers!

The Coordinators are asking that you bring the work(s) which you are sending to the show to the September Guild meeting.  Please include a piece of paper with your name, the name of the quilter (if different from the maker) and the story behind your quilt in a short paragraph.  This information will be transferred to standard show forms and attached to the front of your quilt.  Please don’t forget your label on the back of the quilt!  Your quilts will be returned to you at the October Guild meeting.

We will be setting up two or three display tables to showcase the new tools we use for quilting (such as rotary cutters, self healing cutting mats, etc.), the way we buy fabric (yardage, cakes, jelly rolls, etc.) and some magazines and patterns to show from where we find inspiration!

It would be wonderful to have volunteers to help with the set up and take down of the show, and it will be necessary to have some “white glove” ladies present throughout the show to help folks look at the quilts safely and without touching!  It would also be fantastic to have people to be at the display tables to answer questions!  Please get in touch with one of the coordinators nearer the time of the show!

The Director of Landmark suggested that since the Quilt Show will be near the Christmas season, it would be desirable to have some quilts for sale.  We suggest crib quilts, quilties (24″ x 24″) and “bucket quilts” (36″ x 36″ for bringing baby home from the hospital in the bucket car seats!).  There may be a market for lap quilts amongst the seniors who live in the Landmark area which is a +55 years residential area including bungalows, apartments, condos and the seniors’ residence.  If you are interested in making some items for sale, please note the sale price on your information sheet!

Landmark Court is at 140 Darlington Private, Ottawa.  To get there from the Richmond/Kanata area, go east,  towards the airport on Hunt Club West, over the bridge, to Paul Anka Drive.  Turn left and follow the drive to the first set of lights which will be McCarthy.  Turn left and go to the next set of lights which will be Plante.  Turn right and bear right at the V split and follow Owl a few yards to Landmark on your right.  Go up the hill to the end of the road and the Seniors Residence is number 140 on your left.

We are very excited to be offering the projects of our talented members for this show and we hope that you will pick and choose amongst your projects and present a wide variety of items with which to “wow” our potential viewers!  More information as it arrives! Landmark Court will be advertising the show through their newsletter which is distributed widely through the city!

Here’s to a fun and successful First RAQG Quilt Show!

Hope you might be interested in this seminar that my Artwear colleague, Carroll Thatcher and myself are giving at Creative Styling in Westport, June 12th and 13th.  The information is on the store website, www. creativestyling.com but I’ve copied it here, plus added some details of what we plan to do.   Carroll and I would really appreciate your passing this information on to anyone in your sewing and quilting circles that might be interested.

Thanks so much!

Vikki.

Wearable Art Seminar at Creative Styling, Westport   1-888-273-4465

June 12 & 13
Vikki Zulpo and Carroll Thatcher bring you a magnificent seminar on the how to and how not to methods of creating wearable art. Award winning designs will be presented as they walk you through the design elements of embellishment and fabric manipulation. These master fabric artists will be sure to enlighten you with their tips and techniques.
Class Fee $130 (includes 2 days)

The class begins with design considerations such as body shape, pattern choosing, where to showcase the art and preparation (fashion sketching, colour theory, construction). Carroll and Vikki will then will present a trunk show of their garments following a “technique and lessons learned” guideline.   These are the techniques they will discuss while showing the garments:  felting, fabric manipulations (tucking, folding, shirring, smocking, etc) cording, piping, braiding, painting and dyeing, surface designs such as threadwork, embroidery & various piecing techniques,  applique, and bias embellishment, restoration and recycling, beading, hot fix elements, chenille. This is a seminar format, but will include a few demonstrations and lots of show and tell. This is surely bound to get your creative juices flowing!!

Joyce Collins Diamond Quilt

Joyce Collins Diamond Quilt

I am very pleased and excited to let everyone know that Joy Collin’s beautiful hand-pieced diamond quilt, which she donated to The Quilt, has been selected to be the showcase quilt for the 2009 campaign! My warmest congratulations to Joy and I know that everyone in the Guild is proud that Joy’s wonderful generosity in donating such an heirloom project has been rewarded with this honour!

This is yet another amazing accomplishment in the ongoing success of the Country Quilter’s and the RAQG’s support of the Quilt Marathon in support of The Quilt project. Many of our members have participated in all four of the Marathons at the Country Quilter and are gearing up to join in the fifth this September. There have been many individual and group donations of quilts as well. I am humbled by your dedication and generosity and am so proud to be a member of this happy and bighearted group of women!

Congratulations Joy, and we all look forward to seeing your quilt highlighted in publications and posters for the 2009 campaign!

Best wishes,

Online Quilt Festival

Here’s something new and exciting - an online quilt festival! Amy @ Park City Girl Blogspot (a blogging site) has started this virtual quilt festival and to date has over 500 entries. (I have submitted my quilt entry - try to guess which one it is!)

Do we have any quilting bloggers in the RAQG? If we do, let me know and we’ll see if we can set up something on the guild site to list them. You can email me here

Enjoy!

The CQA/ACC organizes a yearly challenge as a fundraiser. The fabrics are generously provided by Trend-Tex Fabrics Inc.

Here is the link to see the fabrics for 2009: http://www.trendtexfabrics.com/?p=sec_8

This year the theme is ‘ROOTS’. Tree roots? Family roots? Connecting roots? The ‘root’ or beginning of something new? Root vegetables? Root out the truth? Community roots? The hidden roots? What does ‘roots’ mean to you?

Go to: http://www.canadianquilter.com/events/index_events_ttc2009.htm

Click here for the registration form with guidelines. The form can be forwarded to Johanna Alford, President, CQA/ACC, 12115 Cherrywood Drive, Maple Ridge, B.C. V2X 9K4 along with $20.00 by cheque, MO, or Credit Card information.

Only the five Trend-Tex fabrics can be used in your quilt to qualify for the Trend-Tex prize. You may add up to 3 other fabrics and still qualify for lots of other prizes.

To see some examples, here is the link of last year’s quilts 2008trendtex.htm

The challenge quilts will be displayed at the CQA/ACC show in Saskatoon SK, and will be donated to CQA/ACC as a fundraiser when they are auctioned at Quilt Saskatchewan, held in Saskatoon in 2009. quiltcanada2009.htm
