At the upcoming November 18th guild meeting, Virginia Miller and Joanne Myers will present some information and lead a discussion about quilting activities on the internet. In order to get a feel about how RAQG members are using the internet with regards to their quilting activities, Virginia and Joanne have created an online survey asking members about their experiences on the web. We would appreciate having our members take a few minutes to fill out the online survey and thus, help participate in and enrich the November 18 presentation.
Your responses will remain anonymous and answers will be grouped together in order to get a quick snapshot of how our members use the internet for quilting.
To fill out the survey, please follow the link on the left hand side of the screen (under the little Richmond fox) and follow the directions. Or, you may go directly to the link here:
http://www.richmondareaquiltersguild.com/?page_id=677
We are hoping that we will get a good number of responses by November 18th so that we can present the results at the meeting.
We thank you for your participation in the survey and look forward to having you join us at the meeting next Wednesday evening.

It will be all about “I “in Richmond on November 18th. This is your Internet Interaction Invitation.
The internet has opened a new world for a lot of us and some are using it in ways that that others haven’t discovered or are timid about exploring. Virginia Miller and Joanne Myers will initiate our evening’s discussion by describing some quilting activities in which they participate on the internet. Members will then be invited to share their own experiences with the group. Do please bring suggestions, items you have made from an internet activity, great websites, and of course, your questions, no matter how basic. Someone in the group is likely to have an answer. Don’t forget to bring a pencil and pad for note-taking.
If you have some great ideas/sites on this topic that you would like included in a handout, please contact, Virginia or Joanne as soon as possible. If you don’t like speaking up at the meeting, please write down your internet activity suggestions and we will still be able to benefit from your knowledge and share your ideas with the group.
With your participation it should be an interesting and informative evening.

Our Guild meeting will be on Wednesday, October 21 and our guest speaker for this evening will be Pippa Moore, who now resides in Comox, B.C. but finds her inspiration from African themes or the Art Deco period. If you wish to bring a friend, please remember that our visitors’ fee is now $5.00.
Remember to bring your mug, or rent one from the Social committee, bring your membership card to borrow from the library and provide suggestions about that book or DVD you saw that you think other members would be interested in and give to Barb and Irene. Erin and Jan will be monitoring the Fat Quarter table and Jan will have the next hint at the Mystery Quilt. Tracy will once again be having the raffle, proceeds from which go towards various Guild activities. Have you yet completed your African Block of the Month? Put your name in for the draw and you have a chance to win those blocks submitted. Suzanne and Sally will gratefully receive your Quilties for the babies.
So much going on, but please remember that, even though the Executive is there at 6:30 to set up the room, we kindly ask that you respect the 7:15-7:45 Social time with the business meeting starting at 8. We will put you to work if you come earlier…….just ask our visitors from Almonte last month!
Please respect the handicap parking signs and leave them for those of our membership who require them. The bar staff spots are for the Social Ladies who have lots to carry in.
Ann will have a report re the Quilt Marathon for all of us, and those who participated, please remember to wear your pink scarves!
Hope to see you all there!

Can you believe that only two weeks from today is our first meeting for this year!
Our guest speakers for this evening are Thelma Robbins and Grace Whiting. I’m not sure if it is their request or that of our Programme Director but please bring a magazine to this meeting. It could be about gardening, home, cooking, science, women’s issues, sports, news, etc, etc. There will be a box at the Membership table and you must be willing to part with your magazine in exchange for another. Sounds interesting to me.
The Executive has decided that Visitor’s fees will now be $5 per meeting in order to defray some of our increased rental costs.
Jan will be introducing the Mystery Quilt and please remember to have your Summer Block Challenge completed and have your name and the musical group, band, etc. on the back of your block. This only needs to be a piece of paper pinned on.
Please remember your mugs for our Social time which begins at 7:15 and, hopefully, the business will begin at 7:45. I know that you will all have stories to share about what you did on your summer vacation…..remember when we had to do an essay on that at school?!
If you would like an announcement made during the meeting, please call me at 591-1852 or e-mail at: jgfuller@rogers.com. The business meetings can sometimes be difficult to manage if there are a lot of unexpected announcements to make.
Of course, once again and at every meeting we will have Show and Tell to peek at what you have been doing over the summer.
Looking ahead: our October meeting will feature our guest speaker, Pippa Moore who will be conducting classes at The Country Quilter in October.
If you have not yet registered to be a member of a team for The Quilt Marathon, please call the store at: 838-5541 since the team forms are now there. I will have a special guest from British Columbia on the team that I joined!
Our first Richmond Area Quilters Guild show will be on October 17 at the Landmark Court complex and please bring the articles that you would like to display or sell to this meeting, I know that there has been much interest in this. Please have a label with your name and the title of the quilt on it, once again on a piece of paper attached to your article. It can be a quilt, but please nothing larger than a twin since we have limited display space, wearable art, etc. If you wish to sell an article have the price clearly marked and sales will be cash or cheque only. The Executive mocked me when I told them of my experience with satellites and credit cards over the summer!
Hoping that you all have had a pleasant summer and looking forward to seeing you there!

Richmond Area Quilters Guild First Quilt Show
Richmond Area Quilters Guild will be holding its first Quilt Show on Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at Landmark Court, a retirement residence for seniors! This is a special event celebrating the 10th anniversary of both the RAQG and Landmark Court!
The show will be held in the ground floor lounge and will be accompanied by a tea sponsored and run by Landmark Court.
The coordinators of the show (Nancy Sprules, Jacquie Fuller and Lynne Rochette) are asking for 50 quilts, no larger than twin size. to be exhibited on metal frames provided by Landmark and on sofas and quilt frames placed strategically around the lounge. We encourage those who have wearable art items to donate some to the show, as well as miniature quilts and work from groups within the Guild such as the doll makers and the embroiderers!
The Coordinators are asking that you bring the work(s) which you are sending to the show to the September Guild meeting. Please include a piece of paper with your name, the name of the quilter (if different from the maker) and the story behind your quilt in a short paragraph. This information will be transferred to standard show forms and attached to the front of your quilt. Please don’t forget your label on the back of the quilt! Your quilts will be returned to you at the October Guild meeting.
We will be setting up two or three display tables to showcase the new tools we use for quilting (such as rotary cutters, self healing cutting mats, etc.), the way we buy fabric (yardage, cakes, jelly rolls, etc.) and some magazines and patterns to show from where we find inspiration!
It would be wonderful to have volunteers to help with the set up and take down of the show, and it will be necessary to have some “white glove” ladies present throughout the show to help folks look at the quilts safely and without touching! It would also be fantastic to have people to be at the display tables to answer questions! Please get in touch with one of the coordinators nearer the time of the show!
The Director of Landmark suggested that since the Quilt Show will be near the Christmas season, it would be desirable to have some quilts for sale. We suggest crib quilts, quilties (24″ x 24″) and “bucket quilts” (36″ x 36″ for bringing baby home from the hospital in the bucket car seats!). There may be a market for lap quilts amongst the seniors who live in the Landmark area which is a +55 years residential area including bungalows, apartments, condos and the seniors’ residence. If you are interested in making some items for sale, please note the sale price on your information sheet!
Landmark Court is at 140 Darlington Private, Ottawa. To get there from the Richmond/Kanata area, go east, towards the airport on Hunt Club West, over the bridge, to Paul Anka Drive. Turn left and follow the drive to the first set of lights which will be McCarthy. Turn left and go to the next set of lights which will be Plante. Turn right and bear right at the V split and follow Owl a few yards to Landmark on your right. Go up the hill to the end of the road and the Seniors Residence is number 140 on your left.
We are very excited to be offering the projects of our talented members for this show and we hope that you will pick and choose amongst your projects and present a wide variety of items with which to “wow” our potential viewers! More information as it arrives! Landmark Court will be advertising the show through their newsletter which is distributed widely through the city!
Here’s to a fun and successful First RAQG Quilt Show!
